I’ve got an itch. I really need to get out of the city for a few days – refill the bucket. My reserves are low and my Grandad always told me ‘a change is as good as a rest’.
There have been times that I’ve taken that advice as a solid endorsement to get the hell out of dodge, and times it offered a gentle nudge to look at things from a different perspective.
SR and I have booked a couple of days in the boreal forest. Because we’re all about lousy timing, we’re heading into the wilderness in the middle of November. There’s nothing like hanging out with moose and hunters to sharpen your senses and your primordial fight / flight instincts. At least the bears will be sleepy.
We used to do this all the time…pack up the van and go off to a provincial park. Sometimes in the middle of the week, washing off the smell of campfire in cold, communal showers before heading off to work. It made a day at the office feel more like a short intrusion, less like our reason for being.
I don’t remember when we stopped taking time for these little adventures…maybe when we traded them in for more distracting ones that involved mortgages and business plans. It’s time to reintroduce a bit of dazzle in the day-to-day.
What do you do to shake yourself out of that daily grind?
